Although central Wyoming may not seem like an obvious destination for ice fishing, it does offer exceptional ice fishing opportunities on both Pathfinder Reservoir, about 40 miles southwest of Casper, and Alcova Reservoir, roughly 30 miles southwest of Casper. Opportunities vary from year to year, as a minimum 4 inches sheet of ice is recommended for ice fishing (6 inches is better). During particularly cold winters, as has been the case over the last five years, the ice is thick enough to offer at least three months of ice fishing heaven! Walleye, trout and perch are common catches. Each licensed ice fisherman is allowed up to six lines in the water concurrently, so ice fishing tip-ups and a jigging rod are recommended. Be sure to find out when the Annual Pathfinder Marina Hog Fishing Derby is scheduled for this year! Contact one of Casper's experienced guide services for ice fishing options and information.
